the woodpecker

the woodpecker =the ultimate carpenter.
acorn, downy, gila, gilded, northern, red-breasted, sap-sucker, arizona, black backed, hairy, ladder-backed, nuttall's, red-cockaded, three-toed, white headed, golden-fronted, lewis's, red-headed, yellow bellied, pileated

woodpeckers use their beaks to excavate their own nest cavities inside trees (build their own homes) and line the interior of their homes with the wood chips from their carvings (mmm cozy). each home takes about one month to complete. (not bad!) they produce one home per season. once the season is over and the woodpecker have moved on, these custom built homes become real estate for other birds to enjoy... especially birds who can't built this type of architecture themselves.
beats a prickly nest any day! modern homes for birds.
